SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japanese aromatics major Nippon Oil shut down its Marifu-based benzene, toluene and mixed xylenes (BTX) unit on Thursday due to some technical problems, said a company source on Friday.

The unit was expected to remain shut for about two or three weeks, he said.

The company produces about 267,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 100,000 tonnes/year of toluene and 250,000 tonnes/year of isomer grade xylene at Marifu.

Nippon Oil is a leading benzene producer and has plants at Muroran, Sendai, Negishi, Mizushima, Marifu and Kawasaki.

Some of the other aromatics producers in Japan are Idemitsu Kosan, Japan Energy and Taiyo Oil.
