Polimeri targets next week restart on Feluy HIPS

LONDON (ICIS news)--Polimeri Europa is confident it will restart high impact polystyrene (HIPS) production in Feluy, Belgium, successfully next week, a company source said on Friday.

Technical problems brought down the HIPS line in early October. PS production at Feluy runs at 160,000 tonnes/year, split evenly between general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) and HIPS.

GPPS was not affected by production issues.

PS producers were aiming for an increase in December, but this was proving difficult as the December styrene monomer had slipped by more than €20/tonne ($29/tonne).

“We are looking for a decrease in PS this month,” said one large buyer on Friday. “This might be difficult, but we certainly won’t be paying an increase.”

Major European PS producers include BASF, INEOS NOVA, Dow and Total Petrochemicals.
