NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--Essar Oil Vadinar Limited (EOVL) will set up a 1,350 tonne/day sulphur recovery unit (SRU) in technical collaboration with Jacob Nederlands, a government official associated with the project said on Thursday.

EOVL is an associate company of Essar Oil Limited (EOL) which operates a refinery at Vadinar in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat.

The SRU forms part of the project to expand refining capacity to 18m tonnes/year from 10.5m tonnes/year. The Indian rupees (Rs) 84.19bn ($2.2bn) expansion is slated for completion by December 2009.

SRU scheme envisaged installation of two units with 675 tonnes/day of capacity each using Jacobs' sulphur degassing technology. Jacob will also provide transfer of know-how and provision of engineering services, the official said.

SRU would have sulphur recovery efficiency of 99.9% and would help the company meet the stringent sulphur emission standards for transportation fuels.

Under a separate technical collaboration application submitted to the government, EOVL had stated it intended to set up hydrogen plant with Denmark’s Haldor Topsoe under the same refinery expansion project.

It did not disclose the capacity of the hydrogen plant.
