Tech fault halts BASF's Antwerp styrene production

LONDON (ICIS news)--BASF has halted styrene production at its Antwerp site due to "unavoidable technical problems,” a company source said on Monday.

“We hope that it will come back up before the end of this year. We were able to purchase necessary volumes at the end of last week to cover ourselves, and although material is very tight it is still feasible for us to continue running,” the source added.

The technical problem had been unpreventable, the source said, and the decision was taken to shut down immediately in the short term rather than see long-term production affected.

According to ICIS plants and projects, BASF produces 500,000 tonnes/year of styrene at its Antwerp site, with downstream production including 220,000 tonnes/year of polystyrene, 20,000 tonnes/year of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and 89,000 tonnes/year of ethyl benzene.

It as not clear how supply of styrene or downstream products would be affected.
