TORONTO (ICIS news)--German train drivers union Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokfuhrer (GDL) will resume strike action on 7 January after breaking off negotiations with rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB), it said on Thursday.

A strike in November paralysed freight rail traffic, affecting chemical, plastics and many other manufacturers in Germany and across central Europe.

“Strikes will begin on 7 January in both passenger and freight services ... and will only end if there are realistic prospects for a viable settlement,” said GDL head Manfred Schell, adding that the union would not be distracted by any further "sham offers" from DB.

Strike action was necessary as no progress had been achieved even after nine months of negotiations with DB, he said.

DB had essentially backtracked on a tentative deal reached in early December to grant the train drivers their own, separate wage deal, Schell said.

GDL was insisting on a separate deal as the only way to achieve improved wages and working hours for train drivers, he said.

In a separate statement, DB said talks with GDL had been constructive and GDL’s move to break off negotiations was “absolutely incomprehensible.”

Both GDL and DB had earlier said they hoped to reach a final deal by end January.
