SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--China plans to reduce emission levels by 10% between 2006 and 2010, and increase the country’s use of renewable fuels to 15% by the year 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on Wednesday.
Automobile standards could also be expected to become tighter, as the government seeks to reduce car emission levels, and to encourage the research and development of cars capable of running on clean fuels, it said in a statement.
The enforcement of laws and economic incentives has already helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.81% in the first three quarters of the year, it added.
The NDRC also highlighted problems that the country’s energy policies would have to overcome in the near future.
While domestic supplies of fossil fuels such as coal remained high, access and per-capita use of these fuels remained low across the nation, it said.
It would also be difficult to further develop sources of crude oil in the nation, as the high costs associated with exploring the complex ground conditions of the oil wells could potentially curtail any economic gain from the endeavour, it added.
