LONDON (ICIS news)--INEOS Polyolefins has closed its 185,000 tonne/year high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant in Grangemouth in the UK as announced in January 2007, a company source confirmed on Wednesday.

Plans to invest elsewhere in Europe were going ahead, he said.

At the time of the announcement, INEOS said that it was making the move to strengthen its market position in products where it believes it has a long-term competitive advantage.

INEOS would increase HDPE output from its Lillo manufacturing site in Belgium by 200,000 tonnes/year to 630,000 tonnes/year, with a focus on differentiated products.

The new capacity would be in place by 2009.

HDPE blowmoulding is used to produce plastic bottles and containers. Other producers of HDPE in Europe include Dow, Total Petrochemicals, Basell, Borealis, Polimeri Europa and Repsol.
