LONDON (ICIS news)--Nearly two-thirds of supply chain professionals in the chemicals industry said their companies have no formal process for identifying and sharing supply chain best practices, according to a consultant report released on Thursday.

New York-based consulting company Accenture found only 11% of its survey respondents thought best practices were documented, translated into standard operating procedures and measured by their company.

“Sharing of best practices has improved over the last two years but there are still areas for improvement,” said Christopher Lange, senior executive in Accenture’s chemicals practice.

“While companies have traditionally looked at the supply chain as a way to cut costs, they now look at it as a strategic and financially important part of the business and a way to generate value and revenue,” he added.

While 11% of respondents said they had received no supply chain training, down from 78% in 2005, only 29% said they were happy with their training.

Accenture surveyed 400 chemical industry supply chain professionals from 150 chemical businesses in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia in its Global Chemical Industry Supply Chain Best Practices study.
