TORONTO (ICIS news)--Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and two partners are planning an $84.3m (€57.3m) carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration project at its Decatur ethanol plant in Illinois to reduce the environmental impact of ethanol production, the US producer said on Friday.
ADM and partners Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC) and Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) would seek to store the CO2 in
CO2 from ADM's ethanol plant would be injected into Mount Simon Sandstone where the compressed liquid-like CO2 would be stored in the porous saline rock formation, rather than releasing the greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, it said.
Drilling of the injection well would begin this spring, with sequestration and injection of CO2 expected to start in October 2009, ADM said.
"We see potential for carbon sequestration to improve the environmental footprint of biofuels by further reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said Dennis Riddle, ADM president for corn processing.
The US Department of Energy would provide the bulk of the project’s funds - $66.7m over seven years - with co-funding from ADM and other corporate and state sources, the company said.
