MUMBAI (ICIS news)--New domestic auto sales in India fell 4.5% year on year to nearly 7.2m units in the period from April  to December 2007 on the back of lower three- and two-wheeler sales, an industry body said on Tuesday.

Annual domestic sales of three-wheelers fell nearly 7.8% to 276,362 units, while two-wheeler sales registered a negative growth of 7.7% at around 5.5m units, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said in a statement.

However, domestic passenger vehicles’ sales rose around 13.4% year on year to just over 1.1m units in the same period, it added.

Meanwhile, the domestic commercial vehicles segment grew by around 3.6% to 338,551 units, SIAM said.

Total automobile exports rose around 17.4% to 904,468 units from the same period a year ago, SIAM said, supported by a significant contribution from exports of two-wheelers, which grew the fastest at over 24.4% to 604,313 units.

Automobiles are important end markets for such products as coatings, nylon, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR).
