Finland paper maker UPM eyes China bio-refinery

TORONTO (ICIS news)--UPM is exploring a possible bio-refinery project in China that would produce papermaking fibre and biochemicals from agricultural residues and other non-wood feedstocks, the Finnish paper and forestry group said on Wednesday.

Non-wood feedstocks were abundant in many highly populated countries that had a shortage of papermaking fibres, UPM said.

UPM had signed a licence agreement with Finland's Chempolis to use that firm's non-wood technology processes but did not disclose expected project costs, capacities or timelines.

Chempolis’ patented technology did not use sulphur or chlorine chemicals and its low water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions would minimise environmental impacts, UPM added.
