LONDON (ICIS news)--Mexico’s Grupo Protexa is expected to locate its proposed methanol project in Pisco on the Peruvian coast, an official at Argentina-based Pluspetrol said on Tuesday.

Pluspetrol, which is developing the Camisea gas field in Peru’s Amazonian rainforest, has awarded a 50m cubic feet/day natural gas supply contract to Protexa for construction of the methanol project, said Antonio Tella, commercial development specialist at Pluspetrol.

Pluspetrol leads the Camisea consortium, which also comprises the US' Hunt Oil, South Korea's SK Corp, Algeria's Sonatrach, Argentina's Tecpetrol and Spain's Repsol.

The consortium has already awarded a 100m cubic feet/day natural gas supply contract to US company CF Industries for the construction of an ammonia and urea complex.

Tella said the consortium expects to sign agreements with Protexa and CF Industries in about one month.

CF Industries is evaluating San Juan port as a possible location for its fertiliser complex, according to Tella.

The US group has discounted San Martin port as an option because its draught is too small and it is close to an environmentally protected area, he said.

Lima has asked the consortium to offer a third natural gas supply contract for construction of an ammonium nitrate plant.

Discussions were under way but details of the project have not yet been defined, Tella said.
