HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US chlorine production fell in December to its lowest rate of 2007 amid weak demand for downstream products, according to data on Tuesday from the Chlorine Institute, a US trade group.

December chlorine production was 87% of capacity, down from 91% of capacity in November.

“Chlorine demand is not showing many signs of an upturn so far this month,” one producer said, adding that US chlorine production was expected to remain broadly steady through the rest of January.

Demand for downstream polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has suffered under an enduring slump in US home construction.

US chlorine/caustic soda producers include Olin, Occidental Chemical, Dow Chemical, Formosa, PPG, and Georgia Gulf.
