TOKYO (ICIS news)--Marubeni plans to import 6,500 kilolitres of ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) from Brazilian chemical producer Copesul in February to supply Japan Biofuels Supply (JBSL) , a spokesman at the Japanese trading house said on Thursday.

According to Marubeni, this will be the first time Japan will import ETBE from Brazil as as JBSL attempts to secure economical and stable supplies of ETBE.

JBSL, which consists of 10 Japanese refiners, imported a total of 14,000 kilolitres of ETBE from Europe in 2007 for the two-year test sales of ETBE-mixed gasoline, the spokesman said.

Once the quality and economic-efficiency of the Brazilian-made ETBE is proven, Marubeni would start importing more ETBE from the country for JBSL after fiscal-year 2009, ending March 2010, the spokesman said.

According to Marubeni, Brazil has the lowest production cost base in the world, and the country had been hoping to export bioethanol or ETBE to Japan.

However, Japan would continue to import ETBE from Europe, he noted.

According to Marubeni, the Japanese refiners planned to use 840,000 kilolitres/year of ETBE to make ETBE-mixed gasoline that contains 7% ETBE, starting in 2010.

Meanwhile, Marubeni was building 400,000 tonnes/year biodiesel plants in Brazil as a joint venture with Agrenco Group, it said.
