HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Dow Chemical's chlor-alkali capacity in Freeport, Texas, will drop by 13% when production is moved to a new facility in 2011, a source close to the company said on Thursday.
The new membrane-cell facility, also in Freeport, will have the capacity to produce 3.14m tonnes/year of chlorine and 3.5m tonnes/year of caustic soda, the source said. Dow’s existing diaphragm-cell complex in Freeport has a production capacity of 3.6m tonnes/year of chlorine and 4m tonnes/year of caustic soda.
On Tuesday, Dow announced that it would break ground this year on the new chlor-alkali plant in Freeport that would replace the older, less-efficient production complex.
The new facility’s estimated cost was not disclosed. For the latest chemical news, data and analysis that directly impacts your business sign up for a free trial to ICIS news - the breaking online news service for the global chemical industry.
