HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The US refined glycerine price boom that started in the first quarter of 2007 is slowing in the first quarter this year, distributors and buyers said on Tuesday.

“It’s really stabilising right now,” a distributor said. “But global glycerine supply is still tight and the prices are going to stay firm for a while yet,” the source added.

The glycerine price boom has been supported by tight global supply and by increasing demand areas in the US and Asia, sources said.

Contract prices on vegetable glycerine rose by about 14 cents/lb ($309/tonne or €213/tonne) between December and January alone, with tallow contracts moving up about 10 cents/lb over the same period.

January vegetable glycerine contracts were assessed in a 75-90 cents/lb range, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing. Tallow glycerine contracts ranged 65-76 cents/lb.

Major US refined glycerine suppliers include Procter & Gamble, Dial, Cognis, Uniqema and Chemtura, among other.
