HOUSTON (ICISnews)--French oil major Total has started a $2.2bn (€1.5bn) expansion project at its 233,500 bbl/day refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, the company said on Tuesday.
The project includes a 50,000 bbl/day coker, a desulphurisation unit, a vacuum distillation unit and other related units, Total said.
The company said the project, to be commissioned in 2011, will increase the refinery's deep-conversion capacity and expand its ability to process heavy and sour crude oil.
In addition, Total said it will add 3m tonnes/year of ultra low sulphur diesel to the refinery’s current production, raising total output of all products to about 12m tonnes/year.
