HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US chloroform exports rose 19% to 150,201 tonnes in 2007 compared with 2006, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Thursday.

Sources attributed the year-to-year 19% increase to greater developing world demand for chloroform as a refrigerant feedstock.

Exports of chloroform in December last year were 14,319 tonnes, up sharply by 167% from the same month one year earlier, the ITC said.

December exports also were up a whopping 200% from the 4,722 tonnes shipped in November, the ITC said.

China was the destination for 42% of US chloroform exports in 2007, and overall exports to the booming Asian country increased 97% last year from 2006.

South Korea was the second-largest destination for US chloroform exports last year, but those shipments were down 34% from 2006. Sources said rapidly-developing South Korea may be shifting away from ozone-depleting refrigerants, a change that most of the developed world has already made.

Shipments to India, the third-largest export destination for US chloroform, were up 80% in 2007 from the year prior. Mexico ranked fourth, but shipments there were flat with 2006.

In December 2007, South Korea was the top destination for US chloroform exports, followed by China and Mexico.
