SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korea’s LG Chem will briefly shut its 130,000 tonne/year bisphenol A (BPA) plant in March to connect pipelines to a new line that will double its capacity, a company official said late on Thursday.

"We will shut our current BPA line for three days, sometime in March, in order to connect the pipelines to the new site," the official said.

He was referring to preparation works for the impending start-up of a new 130,000 tonne/year BPA line, located at the same petrochemical complex at Yeosu, South Korea.

The three day shutdown was expected to further tighten supply in Korean BPA market, which has been snug due to the recent start-up of Cheil Industries’ 65,000 tonne/year polycarbonate (PC) plant earlier this month.

Feedstock for the new line would come from its upstream phenol-acetone facility at the same location which would be debottlenecked in early May, a month earlier than originally planned, he added.

Other BPA majors in Asia include Nan Ya Plastics, Kumho P&B Chemicals, Mitsui Chemicals and Mitsubishi Chemical.
