SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--SK Energy is planning maintenance shutdowns of two crude distillation units (CDU) and a residual fluid catalytic cracker (RFCC) at its 840,000 bbl/day Ulsan refinery during the second quarter of 2008, a source close to the South Korean refiner said on Wednesday.

SK Energy plans to shut down the 260,000 bbl/day CDU No 5 from 19 May until 26 June and would also shut down the 60,000 bbl/day CDU No 1 from 9 June until 20 June, added the source.

The refiner would also shut down its 56,000 bbl/day RFCC from 2 June until 3 July, the source said.

Meanwhile, SK Energy also plans to run its Ulsan refinery at around 82% of  its full capacity in March, having reduced run rates due to poor refining margins earlier this year.

The company has a combined refining capacity of 1.1m bbl/day. In addition, to the Ulsan facility, it also operates a 275,000 bbl/day refinery in Incheon via subsidiary SK Incheon Oil.

Approximately 80% of the crude that runs through SK Energy’s refineries comes from the Middle East and around 60-70% of the supplies are on long-term contracts with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
