Europe to miss 5.75% renewable target - eBio

ORLANDO, Florida (ICIS news)--Europe will likely fail to meet a 2010 deadline raise the level of biofuels blended into gasoline and diesel to 5.75%, the European Bioethanol Fuel Association (eBio) said on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, we expect only four countries to be at that level in the next two years,” said eBio secretary general Robert Vierhout during an industry event in Orlando, Florida.

Sweden and Germany will meet or surpass the target, the official said, adding that France and the Netherlands were also expected to comply with the goal.

Vierhout said the biofuels industry in Europe was facing continued challenges from critics that have questioned the sustainability of the European biofuels programme and its impact on land.

“We will be dealing with sustainability criteria issues and legislation for at least the next 10 months,” he said.

Europe plans to blend at least 10% of renewables in motor fuel by 2020. At the present, about 2% of transport fuel in Europe comes from biofuels, according to eBio data.
