SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan's naphtha imports surged 64% in 2007 from a year ago after the start-up of Formosa Petrochemical’s largest cracker in Asia, government officials said on Friday.

The country’s naphtha imports for 2007 rose to 13.4m kilolitres, with 1.5m kilolitres being shipped into the country in December, said an official from the Bureau of Energy, a unit under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Formosa Petrochemical started up its 1.2m tonne/year cracker in May which required around 300,000 tonnes of naphtha each month.

The Taiwanese major has three crackers and bought a December delivery naphtha cargo last year after the restart of its No 1 cracker.
