HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Texas will join the group of US states that produce ethanol when White Energy’s 100m gal/year bio-refinery opens, earning praise on Friday from the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA).

Texas is now moving beyond the petroleum industry towards a more sustainable energy future,” RFA President Bob Dinneen said. Energy, especially petroleum, is an important Texas industry.

The plant opens on Saturday, the RFA said.

“Congratulations to White Energy and the people of Texas on beginning production at this new facility and for their commitment to helping set America on a path toward greater energy independence,” Dinneen said.

The corn-fed facility in Hereford, Texas, will be White Energy’s second ethanol production plant to open.

It also operates a 50m gal/year plant in Russel, Kansas. A 110m gal/year plant in Plainview, Texas, is scheduled to start up in 2008.

“Expanding ethanol production outside the traditional areas is critical to the continued growth of this industry,” Dinneen said.

Currently, 143 ethanol bio-refineries in the US combined have 8.2 bn gal/year capacity. There are 57 ethanol refineries under construction and 7 expansions with a combined annual capacity of more than 5.2bn gallons, the RFA said.
