SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Shanghai Petrochemical plans to complete its 600,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) project at Jinshan district, Shanghai by the end of 2008 and start trial runs in early 2009, a company spokesman said on Monday.

The Sinopec subsidiary will also spend yuan (CNY) 3bn ($421.9m) on upgrading its existing plants this year, spokesman Zhang Jingming said, adding that this included work on the aromatics project.

UOP was selected in late April to supply technology, basic engineering services and equipment for the project which will use naphtha from the company’s refinery as feedstock and will also produce 280,000 tonnes/year of benzene.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Petrochemical’s president Rong Guangdao told reporters on the sidelines of the annual session of National People's Congress, China's parliament that it was waiting for central government approval to scrap its No 1 150,000 tonne/year ethylene cracker and build a 600,000 tonne/year unit.

The project was expected to cost less than CNY10bn and should be completed within two years of obtaining the approval, Rong said in media reports.

Zhang declined to comment on the status of the project, adding that it was still being assessed.
