SAN DIEGO, California (ICIS news)--Gasoline and diesel fuel will continue to be primary fuel sources for future generations but renewable diesel is the way to go, an energy consultant said on Monday at the 106th annual meeting of the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association.

Despite threats to producers of carbon-based fuels, Cal Hodge, president of energy consulting firm A 2nd Opinion, suggested that energy producers should support all pliable energy sources, but advocated only the ones that yield twice the energy output.

"Ethanol is the wrong way to go," Hodge said. "It doesn’t yield the energy output when it is produced."

Hodge said renewable diesel was better because it fitted the current infrastructure.

"Renewable diesel is the best choice," Hodge said. "It fits the existing market as it is, such as production, blending, distribution and consumption infrastructure."
