SINGAPORE (ICIS news)—Japan’s Nippon Steel Chemical plans to shut down its 100,000 tonne/year bisphenol-A (BPA) plant at Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka prefecture, in mid-June 2008 for a 20-day maintenance, a company official said on Thursday.

The scheduled turnaround will not affect the contract shipments as inventory levels would have been built up prior to the shutdown, the source said.

BPA supply in Japan remained snug following reduced operating rates at Mitsubishi Chemical’s 100,000 tonne/year BPA plant since late-2007, market sources said.

Other BPA majors in Asia include Mitsui Chemicals, LG Chem, Kumho P&B and Nan Ya Plastics.
