SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korea’s SKC has begun trial runs at its new 100,000 tonne/year propylene oxide (PO) plant in Ulsan this week and expects to begin commercial production in April, a company source said on Friday.

"Most of the PO from this plant would be sold domestically this year and it fulfils the requirements of some end-users which have been importing," he added.

Regional producers and end-users had earlier estimated that SKC could export more than half of its output from the new plant.

"We might even have no volume for exports this year," the source said, but did not divulge the company’s plans for 2009.

The facility would be the first in the world to commercialise the hydrogen peroxide-to-propylene oxide (HPPO) technology.
