BRUSSELS (ICIS news)--Ridding the biofuels industry of its negative image is its biggest challenge at present, according to Dr Martin Weil of Crop Energies.

“We need to de-emotionalise the discussion about fuel versus food,” said Weil speaking at the World Biofuels Market conference here on Thursday.

“Fuel versus food is not yet an issue in Europe,” he added, explaining that biofuels were suffering from high raw material prices, rather than contributing to them.

“Bioethanol is not the cause but the victim,” stated Weil.

Weil was part of a panel discussion on the current state of the European Bioethanol market.

Other members of the panel agreed that much of the bad press surrounding Bioethanol production was unfounded.

“The food versus fuel debate has been highly simplified,” added Greenergy Fuel CEO Andrew Owens.

The three-day conference ends today.
