HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazil will raise its mandated biodiesel blend to 3% from 2% to further reduce the country’s dependence on imports of regular diesel, a ministry of agriculture official said on Friday.

The 2% blend requirement, which went into effect on 1 January, has already saved Brazil some $410m ($262m) in diesel imports, the official said.

Brazil now imports 5% of its 40bn litres/year diesel consumption.

Brazil’s mandated biodiesel blend level will jump to 5% in 2013 under legislation approved in 2005.

Biodiesel consumption in Brazil is expected to total 840m litres this year, according to government estimates.

Brazil has installed capacity to produce 2.5bn litres/year of the biofuel, the ministry of agriculture said.
