TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s production of acrylic staple fibre in February fell 31.7% year on year to 12,995 tonnes on decreased exports to China, a spokesman from a local industry association said on Monday.
Japanese producers had been reducing production of acrylic staple as sales of the product in China were sluggish, the spokesman from Japan Chemical Fibres Association added.
High costs of feedstock acrylonitrile (ACN) also contributed to the fall in production, he said.
The country produced a total of 90,270 tonnes of man-made fibres in February, down 5.5% from the same period a year earlier due mainly to the decline in demand for acrylic staple, the spokesman said.
Production of synthetic fibres in February also fell 7.4% year on year to 76,904 tonnes.
Among synthetic fibres, the production of polyester staple fibre in February fell 8% to 15,234 tonnes, the association said.
