SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd’s (TCL) Malaysia-based maleic anhydride (MA) plant is operating smoothly and has even shipped out on-spec cargoes to southeast Asian customers, a company source said on Wednesday.
The Indian producer’s 30,000 tonne/year plant in Terengganu, Malaysia, started commissioning work in February and on-spec production was achieved about a month ago, the source said adding that the plant was operating at around 80% capacity.
The plant was shut down in January 2007 to incorporate technology changes that would enable the use of butane feedstock instead of benzene.
The company has another 12,000 tonne/year benzene-based MA plant in Ranipet in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, which remains idle due to non-favourable economics of production on high benzene prices that have been climbing in line with record crude rates.
