TOKYO (ICIS news)--Japan’s Toray Industries plans to increase the capacity of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin by 2,500 tonnes/year to 14,000 tonnes/year at its Tokai factory for an undisclosed sum due to robust demand for the product, a company spokesman said on Tuesday.
The company would increase the capacity by reconstructing part of the recently built site in Aichi prefecture, the spokesman, who declined to be named, said.
The updated facilities were expected to start commercial production with an increased capacity in April 2009.
The spokesman said this was the second phase of a 5,000 tonne/year capacity expansion at the Tokai plant.
The first step, which was the construction of a 2,500 tonne/year unit, had been completed and it had started commercial production at the end of February, he added.
Toray planned to further increase the capacity of PPS at Tokai by 2010, the spokesman said, adding that details including the scale of the expansion were yet to be decided.
PPS resin is used in various applications in electric appliances, office automation and car parts due to its resistance to heat and chemicals.
The world demand for PPS resin was estimated at 75,000 tonnes in 2007, and a growth of over 7% was expected this year, the company said.
