SAN ANTONIO, Texas (ICIS news)--Sunpor’s new 100,000 tonne/year expandable polystyrene (EPS) plant at St Poelten, Austria, is on schedule for mechanical completion at the end of the third quarter of 2008, with start-up likely in February 2009, a company source said on Monday.
“This additional capacity will make us number three in Europe, after INEOS NOVA and BASF,” he said on the sidelines of the 33rd National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) meeting.
“We will be consuming an extra 90,000 tonnes/year of styrene.”
The start-up date for the new plant would be related to demand.
“There is no point in starting up in winter,” he added.
He also confirmed that Sunpor had had sold a licence to Sibur-Khimprom two weeks ago for the construction of a 50,000 tonne/year EPS plant at Perm, Russia, next to Sibur’s styrene unit.
“This is a modular plant, so (the capacity) can easily be doubled,” he added.
The NPRA meeting began on Sunday and runs through Tuesday.
