Monsanto to expand US glyphosate plant

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Monsanto will invest $196m (€125m) to expand its Roundup glyphosate herbicide plant in Luling, Louisiana, by about 20% over the coming 18 months to meet rising global demand, it said on Wednesday.

 

"Growing global adoption of our seed products, including Roundup-ready crops, has led to increased demand for our Roundup agricultural herbicides," said Mark Leidy, Monsanto's executive vice president of manufacturing.

 

The US agrochemicals major did not disclose capacity details in terms of tonnes or pounds per year.

 

In addition to the expansion, Monsanto would also build a hydrogen-recovery project at Luling to cut natural gas costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better conserve and utilise hydrogen, it said.

 

Hydrogen is a by-product of the glyphosate manufacturing process.
