Russia's Sakhalin plans methanol, ammonia plants

MOSCOW (ICIS news)--Russia's Sakhalin region plans to build new methanol and ammonia production facilities and would support Japan’s Mitsui in developing the project, Sakhalin regional authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.

Feedstock for the project would come from natural gas deposits in northern Sakhalin it said, without disclosing more details.

Mitsui is already present in Sakhalin’s energy sector and owns a 12.5% stake in the $20bn Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project.In December 2006, Russia's gas giant Gazprom acquired a 50% stake in Sakhalin-2 from Royal Dutch Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi.

Regional authorities in Russia’s far eastern regions have also announced plans to build new methanol facilities.

In March, Russia's Yakutiya region revealed its plans to build two facilities for $1bn to produce 450,000 tonnes/year of methanol and 200,000 tonnes/year of ammonia by 2012.
