TORONTO (ICIS news)--BASF said on Thursday it has put off plans for a €1.5bn ($2.4bn) coal gasification project, which would produce gas to make methanol and ammonia, due to uncertainties over the costs of Europe's emission trading scheme.

BASF could not determine how many emissions certificates, and at what cost, it would have to buy for the project after 2012, a spokeswoman told ICIS news.
She confirmed a report in German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung which cited remarks by BASF board member Eggert Voscherau.
BASF had said at a press event in February it was studying a coal-gas project but had not made an official announcement because no decision had been reached, the spokeswoman said.
If realised, the project could cost some €1.5bn and may be built either at BASF’s base in ?xml:namespace>
