Sanyo runs cracker at low rate on technical hitch

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japanese cracker operator Sanyo Petrochemical has restarted its cracker in Mizushima as scheduled, but is unable run it at full rate due to a technical problem, a company source said on Monday.

Sanyo shut its 470,000 tonne/year cracker in Mizushima on 10 March for a scheduled turnaround and restarted the unit on Sunday, as scheduled.

However, the cracker faced some technical difficulties and was running at a reduced operating rate of 50%, the source added.

The company expects to solve the technical problem within the next three days, which would allow the cracker to run at full rate.

Another Japanese cracker operator, Tosoh, is also having a turnaround at its 527,000 tonne/year cracker in Yokkaichi, which is scheduled to restart on 18 April.

In the month of May and June, there will be up to four crackers shut simultaneously, marking the peak of the heavy turnaround period for Asian crackers.
