SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--A fire broke out at Nippon Oil’s Muroran-based refinery today but there was no impact on downstream petroleum and aromatics production, said a company source on Tuesday.

The fire was heard to be under control and only a limited impact was seen on the production at the refinery, the first company source said.

The fire started at 3.03pm local time (GMT 8:03), at a heavy fuel-oil storage tank at the 180,000 bbl/day refinery in Muroran, northern island of Hokkaido.

“The fire was not very big as the storage tank was empty due to an ongoing maintenance.” A company spokesman added.

Nippon Oil has seven refineries in the country, producing up to 242,000 bbl/day of gasoline.
