LONDON (ICIS news)--Dow Europe and Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals have signed a 50:50 joint venture to build a 200,000 tonne/year chloromethanes plant in Gujarat, the two companies said on Wednesday.
The new production unit would be located at Dahej and was planned to be operational by 2011.
The JV agreement allows the companies to complete a study, work towards financial settlement and start work on the plant which will produce intermediates used in the production of fluorocarbons and fluoropolymers.
“This is yet another example of our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through establishing joint ventures with strategic partners, using an asset-light investment approach,” said Dow basic chemicals and plastics executive vice-president Michael Gambrell.
“This will give a push to downstream users in the pharmaceuticals, paints and grease removal, refrigerant and solvent sectors by making raw materials available at more competitive,” said Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, Minister of State for Energy and Petrochemicals in the government of Gujarat.
GACL is India's largest chlor-alkali producer.
