SK Energy to run No 1 Ulsan cracker at full rate

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Korean cracker operator SK Energy is considering ramping up output at its No 1 cracker in Ulsan to full rate from next week, a company official said on Thursday.

This was because ethylene margins have improved and its demand was rising from its internal polyethylene (PE) plant and from its consumers, he added.

"The increase in production rate however, might only be temporary and the company may decide to reduce the operation rate again in May. It will all depend of the price of naphtha and the ethylene margin" the official added.

In early March, SK Energy had reduced the operating rate of the 190,000 tonne/year ethylene plant in Ulsan due to high naphtha costs.

Although many north Asian cracker operators have been switching to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a feedstock, some of the operators including SK Energy, are unable to do so as their crackers do not have the technology to break down the alternative feedstock efficiently.
