LONDON (ICIS news)--SABIC Innovative Plastics has kicked off its series of scheduled spring maintenance work on its bisphenol-A (BPA) and derivative polycarbonate (PC) production at its site in Cartegena, Spain, said a company source on Friday.

A BPA and polycarbonate line had currently been shutdown at the plant and were rescheduled to restart next week after the three-week turnaround.

The site has a capacity of 340,000 tonnes/year of BPA and 260,000 tonnes/year of PC.

In addition, planned maintenance work at one of Saudi Basic Industries Corp’s (SABIC) BPA units at its Bergen op Zoom site in the Netherlands was due to start on 23 May.

The turnaround at the plant, which has a total BPA capacity of 180,000 tonnes/year, was scheduled to last until 10 June. PC production at the site is expected to be unaffected by the turnaround.

The seller said stocks would be built up in advance to avoid any impact on the market.

One trader said although supply would be sufficient in May, there would definitely be less room to manoeuvre in the market, adding another BPA manufacturer was rumoured to have reduced its operating rates due to some undisclosed derivative reasons.
