US Dow spends $540,000 on lobbying in Q1

Dow spends money to lobbyHOUSTON (ICIS news)--US producer Dow Chemical spent $540,000 (€340,000) on lobbying during the first quarter of the year, placing among the top spenders in the chemical industry, according to a filing made on Monday.

Overall, six of the major US chemical companies and trade groups reported that they spent $2.2m on lobbying during the first quarter, according to congressional filings.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC), a leading trade association representing about 130 major chemical producers, spent the most, at $770,000, according to the filing.

The ACC's lobbying addressed such issues as climate control, asbestos, plant security, energy, homeland security and railroad competition.

Dow was the second largest spender among the six.

Its lobbying addressed trade, homeland security, railroads, environment regulations, energy, employee issues, and the US tax code.

During the full year 2007, Dow spent $1.5m and ACC had $1.3m in lobbying expenses.

The following table lists lobbying expenditures among the largest chemical trade groups and companies in the US. Some groups that have filed annual reports for last year have yet to file their first quarter 2008 tallies. Others have yet to file their 2007 annual reports.
