NEW DELHI (ICIS news)--India’s Phillips Carbon Black Limited (PCBL) is considering the registration of its greenfield carbon black project at Mundra in Gujarat State as a global clean development mechanism (CDM), a company source said on Wednesday.

The Indian Rupees(Rs)2.15bn ($54m) project would include an 80,000 tonnes/year carbon black plant and a 16-megawatt power plant.  The power plant would use waste gases generated by the carbon black plant.

The power generation plant would thus prevent emission of 144,180 tonnes/year of the greenhouse gas and would obviate the need for the power plant to use coal or other hydrocarbon fuel sources.

The grant of CDM status to the project would help the company earn additional revenue from sale of underlying carbon credits in the global market.

The company plans to commission the project in the first quarter of 2009, pending environmental clearance by the Indian government.
