SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Caprolactam major Sumitomo Chemical will shut down one of its two 90,000 tonne/year production lines in western Japan for 2-3 weeks from mid-May for repairs, a company source said on Wednesday.

"We’ll be shutting it to fix a technical problem. Supply for May to contract customers will not be affected, although we won’t be able to offer spot cargoes," he added, but declined to say which of the two lines would be closed.

The 180,000 tonne/year plant at Niihama in Ehime prefecture had faced mechanical trouble late last year following a turnaround.

Spot prices in northeast Asia held steady from last week at $2,490-2,530/tonne CFR (cost and freight) on Wednesday, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
