SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Forty villagers have been hospitalised after suffering from toxic gas poisoning due to a leak at a phosphorous trichloride plant at Handan city, a local government official said on Thursday.

An old valve gate in a gas container at the agricultural chemical company, based in the southern part of northeastern Hebei province, was cited to be the reason for the accident.

"The company took measures instantly to control the leak and the people who felt uncomfortable were brought to local hospitals," he said, adding that 20 people had been discharged from the hospital and the rest would recover soon.

Earlier this week, 16 people had to be hospitalised after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning in Kunming, capital of southern Yunnan province, a local government official said.
