Sumitomo Singapore fails to restart MMA line

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Sumitomo Chemical Singapore expects further delays in the restart of its second methyl methacrylate (MMA) production line of 80,000 tonnes/year at Jurong Island due to technical reasons, said a company source on Friday.

"The line may not restart in May and will hopefully start production in June," said the source. "Technical work is still ongoing after which the catalyst would be changed before the line can start."

The line was shut down on 12 March and was originally scheduled to restart in the second half of April.

Sumitomo Chemical operates three MMA production lines at the same facility – the first with a capacity of 53,000 tonnes/year and the third line of 90,000 tonnes/year were running to full capacity at present.

The company also operates two lines of downstream polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with a total capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year in the same complex.
