HOUSTON (ICIS news)--First-quarter US chloroform exports were 23,110 tonnes, down 46% from the same time last year, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.
March chloroform exports were 8,989 tonnes, down 16% from February and 27% lower than the 12,249 tonnes shipped in March 2007, the ITC said.
Producers said overall demand conditions in the first quarter 2008 were weaker than the year prior because overseas buyers had stockpiles of chloroform and were buying less from US producers during that period.
South Korea was the top export destination for US chloroform at 33.9%, followed closely by India at 33.6% and Mexico at 21%, the ITC said.
US chloroform exports were assessed at 35-39 cent/lb or $772-860(€502-559)/tonne FOB (free on board) USG (US Gulf) during the week ended 6 May, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
US chloroform producers include Dow Chemical and Occidental Chemical.
