SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--China-based Sichuan Chemicals has shut down its five melamine lines in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday, a company source said on Tuesday.

“Luckily, our plants were not damaged and there are no casualties at present,” the source said, adding the plants would resume after receiving the government’s permission.

Each of the five lines has a capacity of 12,000-14,000 tonnes/year. It was not clear if another 30,000 tonne/year melamine plant in Hejiang county had shut down, the source told ICIS news.

The earthquake, which struck Wenchuan county in the northwest of the province, has killed up to 10,000 people including hundreds trapped under collapsed chemical plants.
