MUMBAI (ICIS news)--BASF has begun production of nitric acid at its Antwerp Verbund site in Belgium, with the output to be mainly used to manufacture polyurethane, the German chemical manufacturer said on Wednesday.

The facility has a production capacity of 500,000 tonnes/year.

"We decided to build the plant with our own resources to save costs," said Heinz-Josef Kneuper, the firm’s technology manager in the region’s inorganic chemical business unit.

The plant is fully automated with  modern process control systems and equipped with an efficiency system to remove nitrogen oxide from waste gases, it said.

"This new plant will be replacing a system that is more than 40 years old which means that the yield will also be increasing significantly," BASF said.
