LONDON (ICIS news)--Arizona Chemicals plans to close the majority of its UK polyamide business and relocate production to sites in the US and France, the company said on Wednesday.

The company would close its production site in Bedlington and streamline its Chester-le-Street dimer operation, resulting in 74 jobs cuts from Arizona’s 91-strong UK workforce.

Both the units are in the northeast of England.

“This proposal recommends we relocate the manufacture of ink, hot melt and thixotropic polyamides for the European market to our US plant in Dover, Ohio,” said UK plant manager Dave Schofield.

“The Dover site has made polyamides for many years and the addition of the European grades will make the site a truly global centre of excellence with the scale to compete successfully for the future,” he added.

Arizona also plans to relocate the production of polyamide curing agents for epoxy resins to its operations in Niort, France.

The company was in discussions with employee representatives and trade unions over the proposed redundancies.
